HIFU and the Art of the Non-Surgical Lift
A pleasing lift need not announce itself. High-intensity focused ultrasound, commonly known as HIFU, is designed for patients who wish to address early laxity while retaining the familiar contours and movement of their face. By delivering focused ultrasound energy beneath the surface, it stimulates a repair response within deeper structural layers without surgery or incisions.
The treatment creates carefully controlled points of thermal stimulation at selected depths. This encourages collagen contraction and, more importantly, the gradual formation of new collagen. Changes therefore emerge over time. The jawline may appear better defined, the lower face subtly supported and the skin firmer, although results vary according to anatomy, age, tissue quality and the degree of laxity present.
HIFU is not a substitute for surgical lifting when substantial tissue descent has occurred. Its value lies in appropriate selection and realistic expectations. A detailed consultation should consider facial structure, skin health, medical history and whether another treatment, or a combination of treatments, would offer a more harmonious result. In some patients, attention to hydration, pigmentation or surface texture may be as important as lifting.
There is usually little interruption to daily life, although temporary tenderness, tingling or swelling can occur. Because collagen remodelling is gradual, patience is part of the process. At Devonshire Dermatology, HIFU is used with restraint and precision. The intention is not to tighten every feature indiscriminately, but to support the face intelligently, respecting its proportions. Importantly, the finest outcome is one that looks unforced: rested, refreshed and quietly more defined.
