IPL Therapy and Skin Rejuvenation
London Dermatology | 26 May 2025
At Devonshire Dermatology, we offer Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy as a safe, non-invasive way to refresh and rejuvenate the skin. Using controlled pulses of light and heat, IPL targets various skin concerns while stimulating collagen production and improving skin texture. Best of all, it involves little to no downtime.
How IPL Works
IPL delivers a broad spectrum of light that targets specific skin structures known as chromophores. These include thread veins, pigmentation, acne lesions, rosacea, melasma, papules, and cysts. The light energy penetrates below the surface, reducing imperfections while encouraging new collagen growth. This process helps refine skin tone, clear pores, and improve overall elasticity.
Unlike laser treatments that focus on one wavelength, IPL treats multiple concerns simultaneously, making it an excellent all-round option for skin rejuvenation.
What to Expect from Treatment
Each IPL session builds on the results of the last. Most conditions benefit from a course of three to six treatments, spaced roughly four weeks apart. This timing allows the skin to regenerate naturally, as skin cells renew every 28 days.
You may experience some redness or a mild tingling sensation straight after treatment. In the days that follow, certain lesions may darken temporarily before fading. It is also normal for some treated areas to crust or peel slightly, especially in cases of melasma or thread veins. These effects typically resolve within three to five days.
IPL for Anti-Ageing
IPL is often used to tighten the skin and reduce signs of ageing. Studies have shown:
-
A 24% reduction in fine lines after three sessions
-
A 33% reduction after five sessions
-
Up to 25% improvement in skin firmness and reduced pore visibility
At Devonshire Dermatology, we frequently treat areas such as the jawline, upper arms, and abdomen, helping clients achieve smoother, more toned skin. Combining IPL with professional skincare products between sessions enhances and maintains results.
IPL for Pigmentation and Melasma
Sun spots, dark patches, and melasma can be difficult to treat. IPL gently breaks down these areas of pigmentation, helping to restore an even skin tone over time. Clinical results show that pigmentation can improve by up to 25% after five sessions.
For best results, IPL is often combined with chemical peels and targeted skincare routines, customised to each client’s skin type.
IPL for Thread Veins and Rosacea
Thread veins often appear due to sun damage, pressure, or genetic factors. Rosacea is a condition that causes persistent facial redness, particularly on the cheeks and nose. IPL helps by reducing the visibility of dilated capillaries and calming inflamed skin.
Even a single session may visibly reduce flushing and fine thread veins. However, three to six sessions are usually required for lasting improvement.
IPL for Acne
Acne is a common concern that affects many people and can vary from mild to severe. IPL has been shown to reduce inflammation and bacterial activity in the skin. One study found:
-
A 41% reduction in acne lesions after two sessions
-
A 91% reduction in inflammation and spots after five sessions
IPL can be safely used on the face, neck, back, chest, arms, and thighs, offering a gentle yet effective option for acne-prone skin.
