Malignant Melanoma: Why Early Detection and Urgent Treatment Are Critical
London Dermatology | 16 April 2025
At Devonshire Dermatology, we believe that awareness and urgent action are key to saving lives when it comes to Malignant Melanoma — one of the most serious forms of skin cancer.
Malignant melanoma is a cancer that arises from melanocytes, the pigment-producing cells of the skin. It almost always develops in areas of skin previously damaged by sunburn. Worryingly, around one-third of melanomas originate from pre-existing moles, particularly atypical ones. Childhood sunburn significantly increases the risk of developing melanoma later in life, highlighting the need for lifelong vigilance.
Family or personal history of skin cancer also raises the risk, as does having more than 50 moles (a condition known as Atypical Naevus Syndrome). Recognising melanoma early is crucial. We encourage everyone to follow the ABCDE rule— look for Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Colour variation, Diameter larger than 6mm, and Evolution (changes over time) in any mole or pigmented lesion.
Malignant melanomas are dangerous because they have the potential to spread rapidly throughout the body and can be fatal if untreated. However, when caught early, they are easily and effectively treated. Early-stage melanomas can be completely removed with a simple surgical excision under local anaesthetic, often as a quick outpatient procedure.
“Prompt diagnosis and urgent treatment of malignant melanoma saves lives,” says Dr. Christopher Rowland Payne, leading dermatologist at Devonshire Dermatology. “If you notice any concerning changes to your skin, seek professional advice immediately — early action makes all the difference.”
